Brooklands Yard

2011 Lewes 1 Brooklands Yard
Southover High St.

The Brief

The project involved partial demolition, conversion and extension of an existing removals firm depot to provide a new Lewes office for Axiom Architects. Work on site started in August 2011 and completed in April 2012.

The site lies within the Southover Conservation Area in Lewes. The original group of buildings offered little visual merit. By sensitive additions, carefully positioned on site with landscaping appropriately positioned in-between, the development has greatly enhanced the local environment, without any impact on an adjacent listed building.

The development is planned around the original two building positions, site levels and immediate site constraints to reduce the impact on the surrounding area. New additions help to define a new entrance and provide symmetry to the main façade. These works are entirely reflective of the original building forms, with roof pitches closely aligned with the original and building heights restricted to the original ridge levels.
